ABOUT THE VIRTUAL MEETING

2022:  Timing is Everything: Rhythms and Dynamics of Psychopathology Across the Life Span

The 2022 APPA Annual Meeting will examine the importance of timing in the classification, assessment, etiology, risk factors, manifestations, course, and consequences of psychopathology. The speakers and discussants will cover the full range of evidence from our growing understanding of the short-term dynamics and rhythms of biologic systems to broader patterns of both contextual and biologic influences on manifestations of psychopathology across the life span. These principles will be applied to evidence about mental disorders including affective disorders, psychosis, substance abuse, and other conditions as well as their underlying domains such as mood, anxiety, sleep, attention, behavior, etc. The concepts and research presented will include neural dynamics, critical periods, environmental and intrinsic drivers of within day, daily, weekly, and seasonal rhythms from basic and human studies, determinants of sex differences across life stages, life course patterns derived from developmental psychopathology, and aging research and the role of timing of social and environmental influences on health and mental health. These principles will then be applied to identify how such rhythms and dynamics may be incorporated into our conceptualization, classification, risk estimation, and treatment of mental disorders.
